The Photography Logo Design Process

I thought it might be fun and helpful to show you some of the logos that I designed in 2010 as well as give some explanation as to the fun little process we share together.

Step 1. You Pay Me. (Gosh, I really love that part!) I get you on my design waiting list and send you over your intro email.

Step 2. My primary goal is to identify 1) what it is you are wanting to communicate and 2) the vibe you’re wanting to send to potential clients. I accomplish this by sending over a small questionnaire. The more clear you are on what you want the better I am at creating something wicked awesome (I’ve been trying to find reasons to say wicked before things – it’s just fun!) that you absolutely love. To help demonstrate:

Step 3. Laura (an up and coming stationary designer) sends back over her completed questionnaire and some extra inspiration (see below magazine clipping)! I loved it {can you blame me?} I was so excited to take this image and run with it… All the way to the walls of my home!

Step 4: After studying everything Laura sent me I came up with a color pallet, which you can see on the left of the image below as well as several designs to send over for her to review.

Side Note: Sometimes clients already have an existing brand, colors, etc. and we’re working off that. When that is not the case we develop the logo and brand from scratch. I usually send 3 concept variations over but I was super inspired and added one more to the mix.

Step 5: Laura fell in love with the third logo. We made a few changes to get it just right (Changed the color of the background ‘P’ and the wording below the Paper Dahl text) and the final logo was ready!

Awesome work Leah! I double majored in college in photography and graphic design so I dabble in the logo designs, marketing, and advertising too. But logos are my favorite! Isn’t fun taking all the information a client gives you and trying to create something unique and different that everytime someone looks at it, they know who it’s for? 🙂

Thanks for sharing your designs! You’ve got talent that’s for sure and I loved seeing what you’ve done. 🙂 Happy Friday!

Beautiful work. I’m sure each and every one of your clients are VERY happy with their logos! I especially love the pinkberry one! BUT it may have something to do with pink being a large part of my branding! 🙂

  3. Love all of these so much! Where can I get one! I have been trying to find just the right designer to go thru and I love your style.

    Hi Leah,
I met you the first day of After Dark Portland and after I got home and checked your site out I knew you would be the perfect one for me to hire for logo and branding when the time came. The time is almost here but I’ve been stressing for too long about exactly what I want so I have a question. I’ve viewed all of Sassy’s digital paper packs and they are beautiful, I’ve found several ones I like but none of their colors really hit home for me. Are the colors on the paper packs changeable? Because I’d like to do the logo/branding/marketing all at the same time. Thanks!

No surprise, but I love your logos. ^.^ The end!

  6. Hey!

I am in urgent need of a fab logo as I am rebranding! I started as a wedding photographer but as i have progressed, I have moved into commercial and portrait work including live events (bands) and fashion (models/lookbooks) – unfortunately alot of this work is still paying very little.. but i hope that by rebranding and redirecting that it will change!

I will have alot of new material by the end of this month and am redesigning a new website which will simply be called http://www.sianrobertson.com

Alot of photographers have the same type of logo and i’m sure you get this a lot when people say that want something unique and identifiable to them.. I really need help with this as i want something to be proud of!

Please do let me know what your charges are…

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Sian Robertson
