Tell YOUR Story…

Why do you go blog hopping?

Ultimately it’s because we are intrigued, fascinated, interested maybe even a little obsessed sometimes (you can admit it, no one else will know) with the lives of other people.

Now think of your favorite blogs…

{Go ahead, I’ll give you a moment.}

Why do you love the blog(s) that you’re currently thinking about?

Most of my favorite blogs tell stories. They share the personal reality (or maybe not so real-ity) of  others that I’m interested in, care for or admire. It’s in our nature, as humans we love stories. And is that any surprise? My kids have been asking for stories before they could even articulate it, we are fascinated by worlds that are not our own. Magazines, news, film – even photographs all tell stories and that’s why we love them!

Now let me ask you… Does a person have to be important {what ever that means} to have an interesting story?

I know you’re answer to that one… Of course not!

This brings me to my final question… Are you sharing your story?

To the people who read your blog, you are a VIP and they are there because they are interested in you. In what you have to say, in your talents, in your world. Share it with them….

Potential clients are looking not only to be wowed by your images but they are also looking to connect with you. They’re trying to decide how they will feel if they work with you and in order to know this they need the opportunity to get to know you. It may just be what turns a lurker into a client. So go ahead and share your story.

Practical Tips:

Great places to share your story would by in your newsletter, on your blog, through your about me page (complete with picture) and in your printed literature.

Don’t overlook opportunities to share little snippets of your personality through Facebook and Twitter.

Stories can be shared through personal photos, videos and of course type.

Your branding should be the visual perception of your personality

Love this! And it’s 100% true. My favorite blogs are the ones that make me feel like I really know the person and if we were to meet there wouldn’t be any awkward feelings because, well I know them so much already 😉 This is one area I’m really trying to focus on right now. I think having a schedule for the week or month is the only way to keep me on track. Great post Leah!

  2. Leah,
Thank you for this post! I’ve been in flux about how personal to be on my blog. As a photographer I always try to connect with my clients, but I fear that being too personal may drive some potential clients away. Because my blog is currently my landing page verses my portfolio visitors get to dive right in instead of seeing images right away. You’re post has made me more confident about being personal on my blog, so for that I thank you!

I was just talking to my husband about this the other day. My theory on it (especially when it comes to photographers) is that people want to see the good, nice, down to earth people succeed. The people who you feel like you can leave comments and they actually read them, appreciate them, and respond to them. These types of people always get more comments than others. It is kind of a strange idea, but people like to connect in some level or another, and I feel like blogs, the internet, and technology in general has changed that connecting from being in person to over the internet.

I agree and because human interaction will always be so much more personal we have to add that bit of ‘human touch’ however we can through our technical outlets… Like telling stories! Love your theory!

This is perfect! Just this morning I was debating whether or not to post some funny pictures of my daughter or not. They are very real and true to her, the messy-haired, sticky fingered, dirty sweatshirt {her} that makes me smile and laugh each and every day. I finally decided, heck, why not?!…it will most likely make people laugh and possibly connect with me in a more real, day-to-day way.
    Love it!

Ummm – I can’t believe you were debating!?! Are you crazy? Those pictures are awesome (I saw them earlier today) and seriously… It makes me want to hire you for my own kids and i can do it myself. I LOVED THEM!!!

P.S. Everyone should go look at these pics they are adorable!

Leah – have you seen the movie Catfish? It really made me ponder about how people represent themselves online. Like you, I only read blogs that really capture me, which means the writer needs to be more open on a personal level. But I also don’t like reading blogs that are so obviously “oh my life is so glamorous, my laundry never piles up!!”.

I wrote a post about this a while ago, would love to hear your thoughts:

Awesome Post Noa! I agree 100%, it’s so important to be tasteful but real. None of us need to feel like we’re the only ones that don’t have it together. I’ve added Catfish to the top of my queue – I’m really excited to see it! Thank you so much for the recommendation!
