Don’t Underestimate the LIGHT in Your Garage

Sometimes we under-think things, and other times we over-think them… Am I right, or am I right?

I know that sometimes when I see amazing photography, I imagine that the photographer who captured those amazing images must have had a magical troll to stylize her session and keep her personal cup of lemonade always filled with more sweet than sour. Β I visualize her perfect clients with a fashion-week sense of style andΒ ruby slippers that ever place her in just the right spot (and, of course, these slippers just happen to be a size 6, ’cause size 6 feet are just so unfair to people like me, who wear a 9…).Β Because that completely explainsΒ why that field she uses looks so freaking magical.

Sometimes, just for a minute, I think this way.

Just in case you’ve ever felt similarly… I just wanted to show you some images that I shot this week using my oh-so glamorous garage! Β How classy is that,Β right?Β  Β I simply opened the garage door all the way and set up my Spangled Backdrop from Drop it MODERN about 9 feet from the doorway. Β I shot anywhere from wide open (see the first image) up to 4.5f stop so that I could really show off all the sequins.

Sometimes, everything we really need is right within our reach already.

Now go find your inner fashion troll!

This totally made me smile. Yep, the thoughts about stylist etc definitely is there! Then I kick myself in the pants and get back to my thing! Your shots are great & that background is awesome!

  2. Cheryl says:

Beautiful images. I just might need to get that sequined backdrop now. Thanks [she said sarcastically].

πŸ™‚ I love your description of the amazing photographer haha Because when I do that, I totally think of ridiculous things like a troll styling the session.

Love my garage shots! I haven’t had a photo session with other people but I did a project 52 last year when I shot a picture of myself every week. Several of them were in my garage “studio” with the door open

My North facing garage is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite spots to shoot!!! Wish I could turn it into a studio! I always gives my fantastic light!

I am absolutely in LOVE with the second to last image in particular. STUNNING! These really helped me out considering my basic lack of awesome equipment.

Thanks for this post!!! I have been contemplating using my garage for a while. Now I’m definitely going to try it πŸ™‚ where are your girls standing? Right inside of the garage (where the door would be if it were shut?)? Thanks! πŸ™‚

    • Oh good… Definitely try it! The girls are standing about 9 feet in. They are just on the penumbra of the light. Or in other words, right where the direct sun ends and the shade begins, they are just inside the shaded area…. That way I get the soft light as opposed to the harsh light.
