Help! Can an introvert succeed in an extravert world?

Does picking up the phone to talk to a client make you nervous?

Are your days spent in the company of a toddler – leaving you a little unsure about pop culture (unless it’s on Disney Jr.)?

Do you have a hard time getting comfortable with new people?

Is creating a conversation out of thin air hard for you?

Β And does that mean you’re an introvert? Β … Are you sure???Β

ExtraversionΒ is “the act, state, or habit of being predominantly concerned with and obtaining gratification from what is outside the self.”Β Β Extraverts tend to enjoy human interactions and to beΒ enthusiastic,Β talkative, assertive andΒ gregarious. Β IntroversionΒ is “the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one’s own mental life.”[4]

Some popular writers have characterized introverts as people whoseΒ energyΒ tends to expand through reflection and dwindle during interaction.[5]Β  So basically, an extrovert is energized by being around other people, where as an introvert is energized by being alone.

This may surprise you, but I am an introvert. Β Yep – every quiz confirms it. (There’s one below for you to try yourself.) Β So… I’d like to think that introverts absolutely can be successful…Β and we have some pretty sweet traits that help us out!

What are those traits? Β Well, introverts work really well alone. Β We don’t need others to do our best thinking, so our productivity is higher. Β Also, introverts prefer meaningful conversation to trivial chatter – this makes us much better listeners, and that’s a great thing when it comes to finding out what our clients want and need.

In today’s episode, I’m outlining how you can feel more confident as you interact with new clients…

So… do you know where you fall? Β Take this quiz and share your results in the comments below! Β

  2. April Bowers says:

Leah – – This was made just for me, wasn’t it?! I am such an introvert. When I am with people, I am so caught up in my own head – which does me well as a creative. But not as a businessperson. Thank you for addressing this! Sometimes I think there is no hope for me. πŸ˜‰
On another note. . . I LOVE the gold backdrop. Actually, it is something that I have been looking for to use in my studio. Would you reveal where you got it, please?

    Great advice Leah!
I am definitely an introvert, but I find that talking to people about their kids and interests is the fastest and easiest way to win them over. It helps that I have a 3 year old and parents can always find something in common. By the way, I LOVE your bubble necklace! Super cute! πŸ™‚

    • I agree… The kids commonality is so easy. If anything you can just laugh about cheerios stuck to your unbeknownst bootty. And thank you! I kind of love my new necklace too!!! πŸ™‚

  4. I’m a 10 – definitely an introvert but comfortable around others and I like public speaking (which was probably more of a nurture than nature thing though…) πŸ˜‰ Great tips and ideas! Thanks! And PS – I’m in love with that backdrop!

  5. Vanessa says:

I got a 14 (more intoverted) which I only partially expected.

    • Can I admit that I always think these are fun?? I LOVES the tests in the teen mags when i was little! ‘Does he really like you? Take our quiz and find out!’ LOL
