Why so many photography businesses don’t grow

How to get your business growing again
There is a common misconception among photographers when it comes to building UP their business. ย They think they are working on the right things, but really they’re only going in circles. ย

I see it all the time. It’s so easy to believe statements like:

“If I was just good enough to do this.”

“If I could just afford to buy that lens.”

“If I just got one really well dressed client.”

The truth is those are all great things and they’re worth aiming for but they won’t get yourย businessย to the next level. Why? Because your business has a lot less to do with your photography than you may think.ย

Just consider this…how many times have you seen an a-maz-ing photographer who no one knows about and how many times have you seen a good-but-not-great photographer because everyone is buzzing over them? Again…the success of your photography business has a lot less to do with your camera than you think.ย

Today Bethany asks for Help. She’s been in business for 5 years but she just hasn’t seen much growth in the last two.ย

  1. Leah, Since I have met with you at Chic Retreat and became a “thriver” I have tripled my sales. Since May I have grossed more than what I did in almost last year.
The problem that I am having is that I “reinvest” too much ( aka spend too much in my husbands terms). I would like to know is there a percentage of the business that should be profit? I do have a studio ( so I am aware that my expenses are higher than someone who works from home) but know that I am spending too much and need to know where to draw the line.
Thanks for the inspiration and I appreciate all you do!

    • This is an AWESOME question and the starting statement is even more awesome! Oh my goodness!! I am huge happy dancing over here for you Bonnie! That is incredible!

This is definitely going to be a fall video friday so stay tuned!

  2. Ashley says:

OMG im in sacramento too =D Im not positive on what I want my business to be I know I would like to make more money in the future to be able to have this as an actual job income instead of money on the side great video this week ill have to start thinking about what I want

    • I am so glad you enjoyed this one and thank YOU so much for taking the time to tell me and leave such a sweet comment! As you start to determine what you really want, if a question comes up, please don’t hesitate to email me. I’d love to make it a future episode topic!

Love Love Love this! I’m extremely frustrated in my business not growing! I feel like I’m doing more than enough to get it going, however maybe I’m doing too much?

I would love to actually profit from my work too!

    • I love that idea Jessie! I’m a HUGE fan of profiting while doing what we love! Of course I know you know that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Maybe try taking a look at each aspect of your business from your prospects perspective. How can you create more of an “I muse work with her vibe!”?

And if you would like me to cover a particular topic or question that you have, just email me!! I’d love to help more!

  4. Carrie says:

Oh my gosh!! Hahaha!! You are SO welcome!!!!! It looks perfect with that outfit ๐Ÿ™‚ I started smiling right before the “bloopers” even started (because I already knew they would make me smile) and then you made me laugh out loud!!
Love you, your brilliance, all the inspiration you pour out & let’s not forget your hair (that looks amazing btw)!!

  5. Jes says:

Always a great message and pick me up. Just watched this with my 3 year old on my lap. Her exact words, “uh!, she not dance today”. hahaha! had to share.

    • Do I really dance that much? Tell her I am sooooo sorry that I didn’t dance. She will for sure get her fix of dancing this Friday! And I’ll try to do better in the future! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Maggie says:

Problem: I know what i want i just am not sure how to get there. I want to quit my teaching job and pursue photography as my full-time job. Problem is i have not had many bookings to feel comfortable doing that. So how do i get there? Help!

BTW, i look forward to your videos every week. I don’t know how this one slipped me.

    • Thanks so much Maggie! Okay… It’s all about marketing. Determine WHO your target client it, then study up and find out WHERE she is and go market. And then when you think you’ve done enough marketing – market more! ๐Ÿ™‚ I could share so much more but a comment box won’t quite due. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would highly suggest looking into http://thethrivingphotographer.com If you really want to go full-time this program will make it happen!
