My Black, White, Gold & Magenta Office Reveal & How I Designed it

I’m so excited to show you my home office! Let’s pretend you’re standing in my office and we’re walking around as I tell you stories about how this all came together.

First I have to say some huge thank you’s, the first is to Pinterest! What on earth did we do before Pinterest?! I’ve been asked several time if I used a designer or how I came up with all the design
Pinterest was my designer!

The first step to creating my office was establishing a Pinterest Board so that I could get everything that was inspiring me in one place. My second thank you is a huge one and it goes to Chic Critique, their invitation to feature my office in Issue 11 of Chic Magazine was the fire I needed to make.this.happen!

In fact, while this office has been years in the making, it actually came together from laying the wood floors to photographing the finished space in 2 weeks, because that’s the power of a deadline! Finally thank you to my dear friend Carrie Rainey for coming over and capturing me in my office. You’re the best! Now, let’s peak around my office space and then I’ll tell you more about it and give you all the links!

      • Hi Lauren,

There is a full source list for all of those prints and fun finds at the bottom of this post. I made sure to source all of the amazing creators and designers right here on the blog so you could find your fave pieces. Enjoy!

Leah, Your new office design style is inviting, inspiring, and exciting…all at once. As photogs in business, we must be innovative and give our clients something beyond the ordinary imagination…never mediocre! Your office exceeds by leaps and bounds! Thank you for the motivation to create my own “inviting, inspiring, and exciting” space. XOXOXO DeeLee born to THRIVE!

    Hi Leah!

I am in LOVE with your office! I am in the process of putting my office together and I was just curious how you liked the chair for your desk? Is it tall enough and easy to move around? Would you do a different chair if you could or would you buy the Nina again? You have created an amazing space!!!

    • Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much! It does sit a little low, but I am ALWAYS pulling my legs up and curling them under me so I wanted a wide, comfy chair I could do that in. Once i’m criss-cross-apple-sauce. The height is great. When I don’t feel like sitting that way, I just sit on a pillow.

I really wanted my chair to POP so, yes, I would order the same chair again! 😀

      • Christy says:

I am thinking of ordering this chair for my 32 inch tall desk. Do you think this chair is too low for it? Do you think it would be easy to attach taller legs to the chair?

        • I would suggest getting the exact specs of the chair and measuring that out to your desk to be sure it’s a good fit. If you have a store close by, you could always return it if it didn’t work for you.

  4. Katie says:

I’d love to know where you got that mousepad!

    • I just answered this in another comment, ha! I till have to do a tutorial. I made it. I just used a black mouse pad, spray painted it gold, while wet I covered it in glitter and than put a few coats of modge-podge (no idea how to sp that!?) over it!

  5. Lyn collier says:

    Leah,
You are amazing! This is so gorgeous and so you! I love all the color the accessories are amazing. I want to come sit and be in that room with you RN (right now-teen slang)
I know it feels so good to have that project behind you in time for the holidays as well. You are an inspiration for the hardest working girl! Love it!!

  6. Alysha says:

I LOVE it!! I’m doing my office gold and white (and maybe black) – so this is awesome to see! I love it all and the bar cart is fantastic!! Thanks so much for sharing. AND I can’t believe you did it in 2 weeks!!

  7. Candice says:

    this looks great!
Which two linnmon desks did you purchase? I see one is the one with drawers, but can’t tell what the other side looks like.

  8. Candice says:

    This looks great!!
Would you mind telling me exactly which pieces you got to make the L-desk? I’ve been trying to figure this out with Linnmon/Alex/Nipen pieces and can’t seem to get it right.

  9. Candice says:

Sorry for the double posts. I thought my phone failed me. 🙂

  10. Niki says:

Hey Leah, I know you are a crazy busy person, but if you’ve got a moment, I would love to know the dimensions of your desk tops that you got from IKEA. I am in the middle of redoing my office and that is exactly what I have been looking for. Also, do you have the same little cabinet at the underside of the right end as you do on the left? And I am assuming the middle is held up with legs? Thanks so much Leah! I really appreciate it! xox Niki

  12. Katie says:

Gorgeous office! I’d love to know where you got your mousepad?

    • Thank you Katie! I made it! I spray painted a black mousepad gold , then while still wet covered it in glitter and mode-podged it. (not sure I spelled that right?!) 🙂 It was actually a pretty easy and fast project!

  13. Kathryn says:

    Thank you! Good to know!

  14. Annie says:

    Hey Leah,

Your office is awesome. What a spot to get your creative juices flowing 🙂 I’m actually in the process of finishing my fabulous space. I’ve had the same desk you have for quite a while now and just recently decided to turn it into an “L” (Lord knows you can never have enough table space!) I was curious, where the two table tops meet did you use 4 legs (2 per table)? I really want to keep the space where your legs go un-obstructed
which makes it difficult if there’s no way to attach to the table tops
just curious! Thanks!

    -Annie

    • Hi Annie! I have loved having the L-Shape, although I’m finding that the more table space you have (when not actually in use) means the more stuff you can leave on your desk. LOL. We put a bracket under the desk that holds the two desks together so then you don’t have to have 2 legs side by side. There is a leg right where the L bends but it doesn’t bother me. 🙂

  15. Victoria says:

    Hi Leah!

Can you tell me what dimensions you got the extra glass shelving cut to? I love your gold shelf!

    Thanks
    Victoria

    • I just measured the other shelves and had it cut to the same dimensions. Actually the cutter came to my house and he did it all, but the glass is much thicker than the Ikea standard. It’s probably almost a 1/2 inch thick so I used the glass I had cut for any shelves there was something heavier on. I’m sorry that’s not as helpful as clear numbers but hopefully it helped a little. 🙂

  16. Kristyn says:

    Hi Leah!

I am loving your beautiful space! I have been searching for the perfect desk for my office space and I love how you created the “L” shape from your Ikea purchases. I read the above comments regarding the desk and I know you purchased the cabinet and desk tops but what about the legs? Did you purchase those separate or did the come with the table tops? I know you also mentioned the measurements for your table
Tops but would be able to link the exact items? I absolutely love it and I want to make sure I know what to purchase! Thanks for your help and the inspiration for a lovely office space!

    Kristyn

  17. Wendy says:

Love, love, love this office! Thanks for the detail on the desk! Where did the gold gumball machine come from?

It must feel amazing to have your Pinterest board come to fruition and have your office done!! I’m inspired. Thank you for sharing!

  18. Alison says:

Your room is awesome! What kind of spray paint do you use??

  19. Victoria says:

where did you find the wall piece that is the files?

    • Hi Victoria,

I’m sorry but I’m not sure which one you’re referring to. Will you give me a few more details and I’d be happy to share my source with you! 🙂

  20. Adanna says:

This is a really beautiful space. I came across this on Pinterest and your space really speaks to my creative needs. Thanks for sharing.

  21. Kellie says:

Sorry one last quick, are those White or Glossy White Tabletops?

  22. Kellie says:

Also the name brand of the gold spray paint and also information about the shelf above your computer. Thanks again for answering all of our questions.

  23. Melissa Strength says:

Hi love your office! Can you tell me the name of the paint color on the walls and the exact gold spray paint you used?

    • Hi Melissa! Thank you for loving my office! 🙂 The pain color is called Fresh Cotton by Sherman Williams in low sheen and then spray paint is also from Sherman Williams it’s Krylon Gold in Metallic, Brilliant Indoor Finish. Hope that helps!

  24. Kassandra says:

Hi! Where did you get the dog figurine?! I absolutely LOVE that!

    • Thank you Kassandra! I love it too! It’ for our German Short Hair Pointer who is usually sleeping at my feet under my desk. 🙂 I found it at Home Goods. It’s one of my favorite stores and while doing my office makeover I was going once a week to search for new finds.

  25. Sharon says:

Could you tell me where you purchased your acrylic (lucite) tray? I have been searching for a lucite tray and lucite shelves.
Your office is amazing and I already had a scrapbooking room in all those colors, so I went to World Market and bought that pink chair! LOVE it!
    Thanks

  26. Brittany says:

Lovely office! Would you mind sharing the source for the gold wire file folder holder on the wall?

    • I'll have to do a post on this since now there have been a few questions about it. I originally found it (s black wire file folder) at Marshalls or TJMaxx (less that $10) for my daughters room – I can't remember which one. She no longer used it in her room so I grabbed my gold spray paint and gave it an update for my office! 🙂

  27. Holly says:

Do the gumballs actually come out of the machine? I have searched the world over and can’t find a gumball machine that will accommodate 1 inch gumballs:(

    • Lesson learned, they do not! It never even dawned on me when I bought the gumballs on Amazon that they wouldn’t fit. Since, I have found some cute pink round grapefruit flovored candies from Lolly Pops that does so I’m switching over to those!

  28. Kelsey says:

Hi!!! I love your office space!! Can you tell me where you got the folder holder, the one hanging on the wall. It’s gold and has 2 pockets to put folders and has a label on the outside!! I’m in love and need it! 😉 TIA!!

    • Hi Kelsey! Thanks so much! I originally found it at Marshalls to TJMaxx (less that $10) for my daughters room. It was black back then but then when we moved, she not longer needed it in her room so I grabbed my gold spray paint and gave it an update! 🙂

  29. Ariel says:

Hi!! I am in LOVE with your office!! Particularly the gumball machine. Will you be including a tutorial on how you did it? Also what paint did you use for the gumball machine and where can you purchase it? I’m totally inspired to make one for my office at work now!!!

I am also interested in seeing the second desk that holds the computer screen!

    • Hey Myrna,

There is straight on shot of my desk with computer. Are you wanting to see a different angle or a specific part of it? Let me know and I’ll see what I can do for you! 😀

Your office looks beautiful! I was wondering…… do you have a window in the room? If so, what window treatment did you choose? Thanks in advance for your reply.,

    • Hey Jana! Thank you so much! I do have a window, it’s actually HUGE!! It takes up almost the entire 4th wall. I chose not to do anything. I had a few people suggest curtains but I absolutely LOVE window light and I didn’t want to loose any of it, plus I have a lot going on in my office and I didn’t want to cross over into “too much” territory. In the summer, I love having the window opened, it’s so big that I can literally step right out of it onto my deck. 🙂

  42. Stacy Rosen says:

    Hi Leah
your entire office is BEAUTIFUL! i would also like a picture of your whole desk, if possible 🙂 i’m building my office now and yours is my inspiration! What is holding the desk up (aside from the Alex drawer unit)?

  43. Joy Scharton says:

    Hi Leah,
I love your office. Would you mind emailing me more pictures of your full desk too. Thank you!

  44. Deanna H. says:

    Hi!
What a beautiful set up!!! It’s clear that you have thought of everything and you did a wonderful job!!
This is the EXACT desk I have been trying to figure out how to create in my office! I’d really love to be able to see (like some others have said) the desk configuration without the chair so I can see where you put the placement of the printer table, legs, and brackets! It would be SUPER helpful!! What a great job you have done!! Congrats on your beautiful space!
    xo, Deanna

    • Thank you Deanna! I’m sending them over now!

      • Ashley says:

I would also LOVE to see the pics! I purchased this desk in black a while back and haven’t put it together because Im trying to figure out the bracket situation!

        • I just put all the legs on as you would for both desks and than butted them up to each other and put braces underneath where they but up to each other. I hope that helps you! So yes, in between the corner where it L’s and I sit, there is a post. It doesn’t bother me so I’m okay with that. 🙂

      • Veronica says:

Hi where did you get the little glass thing for like snacks (cookies)?

  45. Rachel says:

Wow!! So well done! Can you direct me where to find the turtle that you have? I’m obsessed with it!

    • Hi Rachel, Are you referring to the turtle that is in front of the Start each day gold foil print? If so, I actually found it at a Thrift shop when looking for fun items to style my shelves.

  46. Sarah K says:

    Hi Leah!

I am in love with you office!! I have been looking everywhere online for a L-shaped desk just like you created! I know many have asked, but would you be able to send pictures of the full desk without the chair so I can see how it needs to be put together and the printer and such stored on the side. Also, if you had a vertical picture of the computer screen with the shelve above it would be great too! I am headed to IKEA next week and would love to be prepared for all I need to purchase. Thank you so much again, your office is absolutely beautiful!
    -Sarah 🙂

  47. Hibah says:

    Hi!!!

I am so glad I came across your page! I’m in love with your office! I’ve been trying to create a cute little office space in my apartment and you def gave me inspiration. I would also love a picture of your whole desk so that I can see how you put it together to make the L shape! I’m trying to find the shelf you have above your desk and can’t seem to find it. If you can give me details on that as well I would really appreciate it! I love your style and your office is beautiful!

    Thank You,
    Hibah

  48. Sarah K says:

Sorry Leah, I looked everyone and didn’t see the email. Do you mind resending? I am currently trying to put the desk together and I am wondering how you got the desk tabletop to stay on top of the Alex drawer unit? Thanks again!

    • Hi Sarah. They should be in your inbox and yes, one side of the desk is sitting on the drawer unit then the other side L’s to the 2nd table top. All of those just have their regular legs on them.

  49. I came across your office space on pinterest and fell in LOVE. I honestly have been going back and fourth on desks from ikea, but I really wanted the alexs drawers and the same table top with the high gloss, however I wanted it to be a wrap around or “L” shape such as yours! I have been studying your desk pictures for two days now, giving up once because I couldn’t figure out how you did it, but I can’t let it go! I read in a previous post that they are two separate pieces (tops) but how did you connect them, what did you use for where they connect to hold it up?.. I see legs but how many did you use, if thats what you did. If you could please get back to me I would so appreciate it!!!
    Thank you!
    Megan K.

  50. Sarah would you be willing to send me what she sent you!! I just submitted a comment asking basically the same thing! Im going to ikea on Saturday (its two hours away from me) I know she’s busy and this post is old and I don’t want to miss the opportunity to get what I need when I am there… I would really appreciate! Im trying to build the same desk!! My email is mrskilstud@gmail.com
    Please and Thank you!!

  51. Maddy says:

I love your space! I was particularly wondering how you got you Mac’s desktop login to be customized? Thanks!

  52. Kristen says:

i know this is an older post but I am redoing my office and love your desk. Could I get more pictures of the desk to see how the L shape comes together and how it looks with the chair. Thanks

  53. Carri says:

This office is adorable!!! Would you mind sendimg me the photos you have sent others? I want to try and configure a space like this!!! Thanks so much!

  54. Gabby says:

Hey! Loving your office and I’m currently looking for a desk like this! I was just wondering, did the top come shiny like in the pictures? Or did you put glass on top of it? On the IKEA website it looks like plain old white wood but I adore the glass illusion! This is what I was looking at online:
    http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/spr/49047119/
Is that what you got? I just don’t want to buy it and end up with something way off from what I was expecting! They make it so hard to tell in the pictures lol

  55. Gabby says:

Disregard that last comment! I was looking at the dimensions of the package! Omg do I feel dumb lol!! But if you wouldn’t mind telling me how tall the desk is, that would be wonderful! That info is not specified on the website

  56. Latreacia says:

    Hi Leah,

Would you mind sending me those photos as well??? I absolutely ADORE your space. You’re awesome!

  57. Latreacia says:

You’re so awesome! Thanks a bunch! Did you get the opportunity to send it by chance?

  58. Hannah Andrews says:

hello! I was wondering if you could list all of the supplies for constructing your desk? Like what table tops you used & size & how many legs & which ones, etc. thank you so much! I love this idea!

  59. Emily says:

I would love to know where your striped artwork behind the lucite tray came from! I have been looking for something similar for awhile. Thank you!

  60. Cheris Kite says:

    Hi,
I love your space! Where did you get your lamp, acrylic items and magazine holder?
    Thanks!

    • Thank you Cheris! Lamp and acrylic items were from home goods and the magazine holder… If you’re talking about the gold one. It was a silver one from TJMaxx or something that I repurposed by spray painting gold and the white ones are from Ikea. Hope that helps!

  61. Rocio Hernandez says:

Love Love this space I too would like to receive the photos I plan to make an IKEA trip this Labor Day weekend I’m so excited!

  62. Lori says:

Hello! Omg your office is beautiful! These are all my favorite colors!! Can you please tell me where I can buy a GOLD LAMP like the one on your desk in this picture? Thank you sooo much!!
    Lori

  63. OMG!! I AM CRAZZZYY in love with your office space it is beautiful and the best part is that it is affordable fashion! Thanks for the inspiration <3 I am really considering getting that pink chair and will definitely be buying some stuff from Laura Kathryn Creations 🙂

  64. Melissa says:

    Hello!!

First off I want to say your space is absolutely amazing!!!! I also wanted to ask you where can I purchase that beautiful art canvas piece with all those splashes on pretty colors that’s on your desk ? And also where did you purchase that white decorative holder that’s sitting on the clear right in front of the canvas?? Thanks so much!!

    • Hi Melissa,

Thanks so much! The White candy dish was found at Nordstrom Rack and the canvas is a custom painting from Laura Kathryn Creative. Her links are in the post! 🙂

  65. Melissa says:

    Hi There!

Sorry for asking another question back to back! I just tried purchasing the Hello sign you have above your computer however when I get redirected to the website it says the item is no longer available. ?? Would you happen to remember who the seller is maybe I can contact them directly and see if they will be selling anymore and can you tell me what is the size of the sign and what color does the sign come in or if you had it spray painted?? Thanks again!!!!!

  66. Kelly says:

I am absolutely in love with everything in your office!!! I just landed my dream job and while I’m waiting to start I am getting my home office ready to go. I’ve searched and searched and you have exactly what I’ve been looking for! I know this post is old, but if it isn’t too much trouble could you pretty pretty please email me the pictures of the desk like the others have asked for? I would be eternally grateful!!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful space with us!

    Beautiful!!!!

I’m working on choosing an ikea desk as well! I love how you used two to create the “l”. Do you miss not having drawers under your desk top? Do you have another “Alex” on the right side of the desk where the computer is? I too would love to see a straight on picture of the desk without the chair if you don’t mind!

    You did a beautiful job!!!!

    Hi Leah!

I’m in the beginning stages of creating a Glam Cave (office and crafting space), and after seeing your pictures I’m returning what I bought for a desk already! You’re on point girl!

After reading through all the posts from the others, I do have a couple questions…

    1. Can you please send me all the pics you sent the other ladies? Details make the difference!
    2. What are the dimensions of your room? My room is not as big, so I’m curious how much space you left from the end of the computer table to the window wall… Want to make sure I have enough space for a chair to move comfortably.

    Thank you so, so much!!!

    • Hey Julie!

You can get all the details for the L-Shape desk here: http://go4prophotos.com/the-l-shape-desk-hack-from-ikea/
I don’t know my room dimensions off the top of my head and can’t find my trusty measuring tape but if you’re concerned about size. My favorite trick is to take butcher paper or wrapping paper and cut it to the dimensions of your furniture. Then you can play around with different configurations and see how everything fits for your space.

Hi there. Loooove loooove looooove this office space!!!! You are so sweet to share all your details. I read through all the comments, but didn’t see this mentioned. I have fallen in love with your XL gold/white mug. Do you recall where you bought it? Does it have a brand name on the bottom. I would absolutely love one. Thanks so much.

    Katie

    • Hi Katie! It did have a brand name on the bottom. It was a gift and came from Starbucks.

        Hello-
Your office space is beautiful! I’m so happy I came across this post in Pinterest! I’m going to try it with out the leg in the middle (sorry if that sounds weird) and I’m not a DIY-er so I need all the help I can get!
Do you know which brackets you used? Were they also from Ikea?
Thanks so much for responding to such an old post!

        • Hey Becca, I don’t know which brackets we used but it was not from Ikea. We got it at a hardware store. It’s essentially a metal plate (you may want to use two) with a screw on each side to pinch the two desks together and connect them. Hope that helps and good luck!

I totally replicated your office! Well at least I tried! I’m still working on finding more artwork! Thanks so much for the inspiration! My husband calls it the divas office! Lol
I want to show you a pic but I can’t figure out how to post it in this message ?

I love your office…it’s gorgeous! I’m not on Pinterest, so I’m fortunate to have found your page & my now inspiration room. I just want to say thank you for sharing. I have read all the comments and must say I have not come across anyone who actually answers comments much less someone who answers EVERY comment/question. THANKS again and best wishes on your travel year.

    • Thank you Esmeralda! I’m so glad you found my office! I always think of it being found on Pinterest, so the idea you found it another way is great! And thank you! We are really looking forward to our trip!!

Hi, I absolutely LOVE your office and am in the process of putting my home office together as well and am using your office design as inspiration. I’m curious, where did you find your white with gold accents file holders and boxes with lids? I am only able to find them white with silver and really love the gold?

    • Hi Stephanie, That was actually quite the labor of gold love. I took a gold pen and “colored” all of the silver to gold. The file holder was a TJMaxx or Home Goods find, it was black and I spray painted it gold. 🙂

I AM IN LOVE!!! I’ve been studying your pictures and tried clicking your link to explain the L-shaped desk. Can you send me more pictures of your desk without the chair in the way and explain how you set up the L-Desk. I’d appreciate it.

Hey there! How big is your office here? We bought a house and I’ll be converting my 3rd bdrm into a home office. I’m trying to get a feel for space ????

    • I believe it’s 10ft x 13ft. A normal sized bedroom really. You’ll be surprised how much room you have in a bedroom when there is no bed or dresser. Good luck with your office design!

  87. love how the office is organized. Makes me want to work creatively and productively
