Social Media Etiquette

Have you ever been the victim of bad social media etiquette? What do you think the rules for well mannered typists should be?

I’ll start…

1. Email unto others as you would want to be emailed. There is a real person on the other end of that message.

2. 24/7 should not really mean 24/7. Weekends and evening hours should be respected. Do not email “did you get my message” unless it’s been a minimum of twenty-four hours.

3. Email is not the new word for Google. If you have a question, Google it before you email it.

4. Social media should not be updated more times than the amount of glasses of water you drank today. Some people are going to need to up their water intake!

5. Just because there is an acronym for it, doesn’t mean you should tweet it.

Your turn! Keep them going… Let’s see how many rules we can write!

  1. Anika says:

yes. Thank you. I might have to quote you on FB 😉 Some people need to learn these things!

  2. Alison says:

If you would not discuss something with the cashier at the grocery store, do not tweet/facebook it. We have lost the TMI detectors when it comes to social media!

  3. Bree says:

If you have something to say, say it to the person you want to say it to. Not on your page for all to see and for all your friends to ask you what is wrong! Passive aggressiveness at its worst!

  4. Nicole says:

Use the space bar. A period is for the end of a sentence not.for.in.between.every.word.

  5. I have to constantly remind my teenage daughters …If you wouldnt let your grandmother see or hear what you post then DONT post it!!

  6. Jennifer says:

My pet peeve….someone giving me a deadline or specific time to expect a reply email from them and then …crickets! Don’t give me a specific time if you can’t stand by it. That just makes me want to pull my hair out and is so unprofessional.

  7. The follow for a follow requests just sell yourself short. I get these from other bloggers all the time and if I don’t follow back, they follow up with a “why haven’t you returned my follow?”

Only follow people whom you have an interest in learning from, sharing with, laughing with, whatever – your follower count will increase with the more people that you follow whom you actually WANT to interact with. If you found John Smith because of a shared love of almonds, most like John has made contact with other followers that you can connect with too.

I see this all the time on social sites.

    Great post!!!

  8. Happy Astorga says:

These were all good points, thanks!
Also, can I request a post? A post on light? Not the basic info on light and photography that is often posted on photo blogs, but the deeper, more advanced info on light. I feel like I’m ready to take my knowledge of this to the next level but am not sure where to find the info! Thanks!

  9. It drives me bonkers when 98% of the status updates in my newsfeed have horrible grammar and the spelling of a 1st grader. I mean, really. Take the extra 6 seconds to look over what you just typed…

  10. I totally know what you mean! There’s nothing worse than a Facebook friend that only posts negative comments about everyone else.
