QUIT: Is Your Boundless Life On The Other Side of Quitting? with Dr. Taniqua (EP49)

LISTEN ON YOUR FAVE PLATFORM: Apple // Audible  // Google

What in the heck do you do if you’ve gotten everything you said you wanted and you don’t feel happy?

Are you broken?
Is there something wrong with you?
Or did you just have the wrong goal to begin with?

It’s an awful place to be, and it’s EXACTLY where Dr Taniqua Miller found herself. She had been practicing medicine as a board-certified OBGYN and National Certified Menopause Practitioner for over 14 years when she hit the burnout wall.

And it hit HARD.

After graduating from Yale and Harvard medical school, practicing medicine, and working her way up the ladder, she found herself feeling unsatisfied, unhappy, and like she STILL wasn’t doing enough. This is a woman who has reached all of the levels of success, and yet she still felt like she had to prove something.

So if a Harvard doctor doesn’t feel like enough, where does that put the rest of us?

Don’t worry, we’ll be sharing!

In this episode, Dr. Taniqua shares what she did to ditch the panic attacks and live a boundless life.

Spoiler: She quit.

Today we are diving into her story of quitting the very thing she had worked so hard for, how she overcame burnout, what it took to get her living a boundless life, and how you can use her QUIT method to get to your boundless life too.

In this episode:

3:25 Headed for burnout
7:16 When you’ve done it all, and it STILL isn’t enough

Question

Question everything you are doing.

Ask yourself why are you even doing all the things on your to-do list. Is it out of obligation or guilt, or is it because you really want to be doing that thing?

When we search deeply for the answer to why we are keeping ourselves busy, sometimes we find out that there are maybe some other motives or emotional needs we are trying to fill. For example, Dr. Taniqua said that she tied her accomplishments to her worth and that taking on more work gave her an opportunity to achieve.

I did the same thing as an entrepreneur, I created my own little prison. I would only allow myself to celebrate my success and achievements for a minute before I raised the bar for myself. I had to keep climbing and it never felt like enough.

Understand

When it comes to quitting, you really need to understand the impact on YOU if you were to stay or leave a situation or a role.

Sometimes we stay in situations that no longer serves us because we are worried about the impact it would have on others. I can’t quit this job because what would they do without me?!

We convince ourselves that we are indispensable and are the only one that can do a particular role. That is true when it comes to your role as a wife and a mom. No one else can do that role other than you. But everything else?

Truth bomb: You are completely replaceable.

So when it comes to understanding the impact quitting has, it’s important to put yourself and your family first and understand the impact this decision has on your family first.

Intuition

So often, we look outside ourselves for the answer, but honestly, your gut knows. Lean into that intuition, that little voice that tells you the truth.

We all have intuition, but unfortunately, we don’t trust ourselves a lot of the time.

The thing you really need to do is actually silence everyone and everything else and sit in silence and be still for a bit. Sit with a journal, meditate, visualize different scenarios, and sit with the feelings that each of those brings.

Trust your gut.

Take Action

Ever been paralyzed with indecision? Well, action is how you overcome fear of the unknown. When you take action, you bet on yourself and what a powerful message to send to your brain! The cool thing with taking action is that it doesn’t have to be this big huge grand thing where you quit your job in some dramatic movie worthy fashion.

You simply have to do something.

When Dr. Taniqua started to consider quitting, the first thing she did was just draft a resignation letter. She didn’t send it; she just sat with it. But she did something. When the time was right…she took the next step.

And here’s the beautiful thing. Quiting does NOT mean forever. As you’ll hear in this episode. Dr. Taniqua found her passion again and she figured out that she wanted to do things differently this time. That means the next time, it’s going to feel different… Better! Because she’s setting the boundaries and the rules for what she wants for her life!

Okay, we are not done. We may be wrapping up this episode, but that’s only because I’ve broken it into a part one and a part two.

Next, we are going to jump in and talk about perimenopause and menopause to help us all be a little more educated on how to get through perimenopause and menopause with more grace and gumption!

So, go ahead and jump in for part two, our next episode on Balancing Busy Podcast.
