Main Character Energy for Moms: Balance Edition (Ep 163)

Let’s talk about main character energy for moms. Have you ever stopped to think: If someone made a movie about my life right now, would I be the main character… or just the assistant to everyone else’s plot?
Ouch, right?

As women—especially moms—it’s easy to slide into the background of our own story. We’re doing all the things for all the people… but somewhere along the way, we lose sight of us.

On this week’s episode of Balancing Busy, I’m talking about main character energy, but not in the social media sense of being over-the-top or self-centered. I’m giving it a twist. This isn’t about drama—it’s about direction. It’s not hustle energy, it’s I get to write the script energy.

And when it comes to balance, that kind of energy can change everything.

What Is “Main Character Energy”—Balance Style?

To me, main character energy isn’t about needing attention or spotlight. It’s about intention. It’s about waking up and asking:

  • How do I want to feel today?
  • What actually matters to me this week?
  • Where have I been putting myself dead last—and why?

When you live reactively, you’re constantly responding to other people’s needs. But when you live with main character energy, you become directive—you lead from your values and your vision.

My First Taste of Main Character Energy (Before It Had a Name)

Over 17 years ago, I was a young mom of three (ages 3, 2, and four months—yes, really), and I was completely wrapped up in everyone else’s lives. I could tell you what milestones the kids had hit, how my husband was doing in school… but I couldn’t tell you anything about me.

I felt like I was disappearing. So I started a business—not because I had a brilliant idea, but because I wanted something that was mine. Something that gave me purpose outside of being someone else’s support character.

That small shift changed everything.

A Simple Example from Real Life: Five Miles of Clarity

Fast forward to today. My husband and son planned a two-week trip to Arizona—sunshine, surf training, and all their dream activities. Me? I’m a homebody. I like structure, my routines, knowing what’s for dinner and where my slippers are.

By day three, I felt off. Grouchy. Unsettled. So I made a choice: I laced up my shoes and walked five miles while everyone else slept.

It wasn’t about fitness. It was about me.

  • I did my Spanish lesson.
  • I listened to a book I’d been meaning to start.
  • I caught up on Marco Polos with friends.
  • I walked in silence and soaked in the sunrise.

That one walk? It reset everything. And I repeated it every day for the rest of the trip.

3 Ways to Reclaim Main Character Energy This Week

If you’re craving more balance and less burnout, try one (or all) of these:

1. Narrate Your Life Like a Movie

Start your morning like this: She stretched, poured her coffee, and claimed the next hour as hers…
Then live it. What would your next hour look like if you were writing the script?

2. Create a “Main Character Morning”

Even just 15 intentional minutes can shift your whole day. Journal, walk, pray, stretch, read something you love. As time allows, grow that space. It’s sacred.

3. Set One Bold Boundary

Say no. Cancel something. Don’t fill that open space with more to-dos. Protect your peace and your joy. You don’t need permission.

Here’s the Truth: You Don’t Do This Alone

This isn’t about going solo or ignoring your people. It’s about co-creating with God. Aligning your days with divine rhythms, not just Google Calendar reminders.

Main character energy—real, grounded, soul-filling main character energy—isn’t selfish. It’s how we come back home to ourselves, and show up better for everyone we love.

So this week, ask yourself:

Where can I take up just a little more space in my own life?

And then go do it.

You’re not just supporting the plot—you’re the one writing it.
