The Two Types of Busy: How to Tell If You’re Productively Busy or Just Spinning in Circles (Ep 196)

If there’s one word moms say more than “where are your shoes?” it’s “busy.”
We use it like a reflex:
“I’ve been so busy.”
“It’s just a busy season.”
“Oh, you know me—always busy!”

But if we listen closely, what most of us really mean isn’t busy at all. We’re actually saying things like:
“I’m overwhelmed.”
“I’m stretched too thin.”
“I’m trying so hard… and still feel behind.”

The truth is, not all busy is bad. There are different versions of busy—and knowing which one you’re living in changes everything.

Because one kind of busy builds your life.
The other just fills your calendar.

Busy Isn’t a Badge of Honor—It’s a Clue

Somewhere along the way, “busy” became a badge of honor. We started equating it with worth:
The busier you are, the better the mom, friend, or professional you must be.
But here’s the truth—being busy doesn’t mean you’re doing the right things.

It’s simply a signal. A clue that something in your system might not be working as well as it could. The key is figuring out which version of busy you’re in.

Productive Busy vs. Chaotic Busy

Let’s break it down:

Productive Busy has direction.
It’s focused effort toward what truly matters. You might still have a full schedule, but you feel progress, satisfaction, and margin. You’re tired at the end of the day—but it’s the good kind of tired. You know what you accomplished, and it feels meaningful.

Chaotic Busy, on the other hand, is motion without meaning.
It’s running from one thing to the next, reacting instead of leading, constantly doing but never moving forward. You’re exhausted but not fulfilled. The more you do, the further behind you feel.

Here’s the quick check-in:
When your head hits the pillow at night, what’s your first thought?

  • “I never stopped moving, and I don’t even know what I accomplished.” → That’s chaotic busy.
  • “I never stopped moving, but wow, that felt good.” → That’s productive busy.

A Simple Question That Can Change Everything

The next time you hear yourself say, “I’m just so busy,” pause and ask:
👉 “Am I moving with purpose, or just spinning in circles?”

That single question can shift your day from chaos to clarity.

Why I Don’t Use the Word “Busy” Anymore

Personally, I try not to use the word busy—at least, not without awareness. I don’t want it to be part of my identity. Because when “busy” becomes who we are, it’s almost impossible to create balance.

Instead, I try to focus on fullness. My life is full—I wear a lot of hats, I run a business, I volunteer, I’m a mom, we travel—but I don’t feel frantic. I feel balanced.

That’s the goal: a full life that still feels calm.

Untangling Worth from Busyness

This might be the hardest part.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that busy = valuable. That doing more means being more.

But it’s time to rewrite that story.

Rest is not laziness.
Saying no is not selfishness.
And doing less can actually mean living more.

When you pause before you say yes and ask, “Is this aligned with what truly matters to me—or am I just saying yes because I feel like I should?” …you start leading your life instead of reacting to it.

You Deserve More Than a Full Schedule

You deserve a full, joyful, intentional life.
One where you’re not constantly trying to keep up—but are proud of what you’re creating.

So the next time you catch yourself saying, “I’m just so busy,” take a breath.
Check in.
Are you building something meaningful—or just filling space?

Because one version of busy will drain you.
The other will fulfill you.
And finding the balance between the two?
That’s where peace—and purpose—live.

Let’s Talk About It

Share this episode with your best friend, sister, or mom and have the conversation.
Where are each of you on the “busy” spectrum right now?
Do you feel more productive busy or chaotic busy lately?

Talking about it out loud helps us break free from the old patterns of hustle culture and start designing lives that actually feel good—not just look full.

You deserve a life that’s full of meaning, not just motion.
