Between Besties: January Doesn’t Count, the Unexpected Road Trip, and an Orange Coat (Ep 203)

🎧  Apple | Spotify | Audible

January doesn’t count for me—and I’m completely okay with that.

This episode is the first in a new monthly series I’m calling Between Besties. Think of it as a check-in. The kind where I share what’s actually been shaping my life lately—the stories, moments, and realizations I’d talk through with a close friend.

In this episode, I’m sharing why I let January be my sluff card month, why February is really my “go” month, and how giving myself permission to ease in changes everything.

I’m also sharing about an unexpected road trip with my dad—one that came together quickly, felt heavy and meaningful, and reminded me how much simply showing up matters. It wasn’t planned, it wasn’t convenient, and it ended up being one of the most grounding moments of the month.

Along the way, I talk about how heavy and joyful moments can coexist, why I don’t rush the start of the year, and how sometimes the most important things don’t look productive at all.

A Quote That Stuck With Me

One idea from this month really stopped me in my tracks:

“Wisdom is understanding the long-term consequences of your actions.”
— Naval Ravikant

This quote perfectly captured what I kept noticing—how easy it is to make decisions that feel fine in the moment, and how much wisdom lives in pausing long enough to think ahead.

🧡 The Orange Coat

Okay… this is the coat I was telling you about. It’s way more casual than I usually go, but I love it. It’s oversized, super casual, and very orange. I completely beelined for it in the store, and now I’m still deciding if it stays.

When I was in junior high, I wore orange every single day—fiery orange—and I think even then I understood something about being known for something. I read Joyful this month, which talks about curating joy through small choices, and I thought about this coat immediately. So… maybe it stays.

📚 Books I Read This Month

  • The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Volume 8 by Beth Brower
This one took me a minute to get into, but once it hooked me, I was fully invested. It’s diary-style, a little quirky, and somehow everyone I know who’s read it ends up quoting it without realizing it.
  • The No-Show by Beth O’Leary
Such a fun, easy read. Three women, one guy, all stood up on Valentine’s Day—and then the story unfolds in a way I didn’t expect. Perfect if you want something light but still smart.
  • How to Start a Cult by Jody Raynsford
I know the title sounds a little shocking, but it’s actually a business book—and honestly, it made me think a lot about community, leadership, and why people stay committed to certain ideas and movements.
  • The Almanack of Naval Ravikant by Eric Jorgenson
I didn’t agree with everything in this one, but there were moments that really stopped me in my tracks. One quote about wisdom and long-term consequences has been living rent-free in my head ever since.

☕ Something I’m Loving This Month

Koracao Ceremonial Cacao (Maya W’Eqchi) – this is my 45G of Protein Hot Chocolate

I don’t do it every morning, but most mornings. It’s not about productivity—it’s about presence (although I do feel noticeably more focused!).

I mix it with protein and collagen, which makes it feel indulgent (and no, it’s not Swiss Miss – think straigh cocoa powder, there is NO sweetener to it). But, I can genuinely feel a difference when I drink it, and now I crave it because I love how I feel afterward.

My recipe:
15-18 g Koracao Ceremonial Cacao
1 can Nuri Chocolate (30g proteint and my sweetner)
1 pinch Ceylon Cinnamon
1 scoop Momentous Collagen Powder (no scent, no flavor and 15g protein + my Dr. Hubby approves of this one!)

Directions: Add splash of water to pan and put on heat. Measure out Karacoa and poor into pan. Start wisking. Add in Ceylon Cinnamon and Collagen and wisk. Once combined and sludgy I pour in the can of Nuri Protein. Heat to desired temp and drink!

If January hasn’t felt like a full-on fresh start for you, you’re not behind. You might just be playing the long game.

And truly—tell me… should I keep the orange coat?
