Gold Gumball Machine DIY

chic Gold glitter Gum ball Machine
There are a few items from my office makeover that have received an extra amount of attention, so I thought I’d show in detail some of the DIY projects I did to complete my office. It might just give you an inkling to do something similar for a space near you. Today I’m breaking down this super simple DIY Gold Gumball Machine Makeover. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

PROJECT SUPPLIES:
Painters Tape
Tinfoil
Gold Spray Paint (I used Krylon Gold Interior/Exterior Aerosol Paint – see here)
Gumball Machine (I found a used machine at a thrift store)

This project was really easy and that’s coming from someone who is rarely willing to do the work a DIY project requires. I’m that person who just buys it, rather then try to tackle it myself (Etsy loves me!!), but since I was having trouble finding a gold gumball machine and it seemed so obvious that my new office just had to have one, I got to work.

I found a used gumball machine at Rusty Glamour, one of my favorite little shops in Battle Ground, WA. while staying the weekend with friends. (Miss you Ev!)

STEP 1: Disassemble your gumball machine. *You might want to take pictures of where all the pieces go, two You Tube videos later and I still have 1 piece that no longer seems to fit.

STEP 2: Spray paint is not something you want to ingest so tape off the inner part of your machine where gumballs or candy will sit. I used tinfoil and painter’s tape and it worked great. I also, covered that clear plastic stopper thingy that stops the gum when it comes rolling out, but that’s a matter of preference. Now that I’m thinking about it, that made it where I had to spray up into the gumball shoot so I probably should have sprayed the plastic stopper gold so that I didn’t need to paint the interior.

STEP 3: Spray your paint on in layers. I’m a terrible painter and I know it’s because I’m not patient enough. I have a tendency to want to just blast the sucker and get it done in one coat, but I’ve been told time and time again to spray lightly and in layers for best results so this time I listened. 🙂

Below you’ll see a little red coming through during the early layers and the original red no longer coming through on my last layer. Overall I painted about 4 layers.

STEP 4: Allow to dry completely, remove tinfoil, tape and reassemble (here’s where those pictures will come in handy reminding you where all those inner parts go). Now it’s time to fill your machine. If you’re wanting a specific color, this is not as easy as you think! These machines fit 1/4″ diameter gum balls (like these). I didn’t consider that when I purchased my double bubble gum balls off Amazon and sure enough they don’t fit down the chute.  I ended up finding a round pink chewy grapefruit candy in one of those fill-your-bag candy shops in the mall so as soon as the kids finish off the double bubble, I’ll be switching to those.

I have a small wedding show tomorrow and thought this would be perfect for some candy! I totally had a Jelly Belly branded one that my kids had. I didn’t have the spray paint but remembered I JUST used the Martha Stewart Liquid Gold Leaf for something and figured I would try it. Worked like a charm! Thank you for the suggestion! It came out so cute!

  3. I love this project! It’s such a simple idea, but it looks so chic when it’s finished! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I’m spray painting a small one and a larger one that I have for my nieces new room so it won’t look so baby-ish. So excited! I will be spraying them whenever we have a room change.
